Salvigenin
5-hydroxy-6,7-dimethoxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4H-chromen-4-one, also known as 5-hydroxy-6,7,4'-trimethoxyflavone or 7-O-methylpectolinarigenin, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 7-o-methylated flavonoids. These are flavonoids with methoxy groups attached to the C7 atom of the flavonoid backbone. Thus, 5-hydroxy-6,7-dimethoxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4H-chromen-4-one is considered to be a flavonoid lipid molecule. 5-hydroxy-6,7-dimethoxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4H-chromen-4-one is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral. Outside of the human body, 5-hydroxy-6,7-dimethoxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4H-chromen-4-one has been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as rosemaries, mandarin orange (clementine, tangerine), common sages, sweet basils, and peppermints. This could make 5-hydroxy-6,7-dimethoxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4H-chromen-4-one a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. Salvigenin is expected to be in Cannabis as all living plants are known to produce and metabolize it.
